Postpartum hair loss commonly starts at around three months after birth. The amount of time between childbirth and the onset of shedding corresponds to the length of the resting phase of hair growth (between 1 and 6 months, with an average of three months). The hair loss can seem more extreme if your hair grew much more than normal during pregnancy, or if you have long hair. Most women will return to their usual hair growth cycle within six months, or between 6 and 12 months after birth.

What can you do while you wait for your hair to return to its normal growth cycle?

  • Get a good haircut. Some moms choose this time to get a shorter haircut or one that requires less care.
  • Experiment with different hairstyles.
  • A good quality shampoo and conditioner may help.
  • Try different styling products, such as mousses or texturizers that “bulk up” the appearance of your hair.
  • Avoid using a brush or comb that pulls or stresses the hair.
  • A multivitamin/mineral supplement may be helpful. Make sure you’re getting enough protein.

Delivering a baby is a stressful job, both for the mind and the body. You experience an emotional turmoil. Although stress alone is not responsible, but yes, it does affect the hair follicles and contributes to the hair loss.

Another cause of hair loss is the depletion of nutritional reserves in your body due to breastfeeding. Your hair follicles are deprived of necessary nutrition leading to their death.

Tips To Handle Hair Loss

There is not much you can do to prevent hair loss. It’s bound to happen and is a normal part of pregnancy .cycle. However, there are ways to handle the situation, if not prevent it.

  • Get a new hair-do!
  • Be conscious of what’s on your plate. Make sure you are consuming enough nutrition to suffice the needs of your body as well as for breast-feeding.
  • Don’t worry about hair loss. You will add to more stress and it will worsen the situation. Enjoy your newborn!
  • Do not neglect your hair. They are still lovely!

Hair loss is a temporary phenomenon. It will soon pass away.
